Most visitors to Tokyo bounce between Shibuya, Shinjuku, and Asakusa and never see how the city actually lives. Kameari, in Katsushika ward on the JR Joban Line, is the opposite experience: a shitamachi (old town) neighborhood where shopping streets are full of locals, restaurants are family-run, and evenings are calm.
What Kameari is known for
Manga fans know Kameari as the home of Kochikame, the long-running comedy series about a local police officer, and bronze statues of its characters are scattered around the station. Beyond that, the area is anchored by lively shopping streets and the large Ario Kameari mall for anything you need, from groceries to kids' clothes.
Food is the quiet highlight: local ramen shops, izakaya, bakeries, and old coffee shops at neighborhood prices. Eating where locals eat is the whole point of staying here.
Getting around from Kameari
Kameari is on the JR Joban Line. A quick transfer at Kita-Senju connects you to the Tokyo Metro network, and Ueno, Asakusa, and Akihabara are all easy trips. You are in the real city, but central Tokyo is still comfortably within reach.
