Otaru is an easy day trip from Sapporo: the fastest JR train takes 32 minutes, and the canal is about ten minutes on foot from Otaru Station. One unhurried afternoon covers the canal, the old merchant street and an early sushi dinner. We run three apartments in Sapporo's Kita ward, and this is the day we sketch for guests who ask. Times and dates below were checked on the official sites on 5 November 2026.
How do you get from Sapporo to Otaru?
Take a JR Rapid Airport train west from Sapporo Station. The fastest services reach Otaru in 32 minutes, according to the Otaru Tourism Association, and the adult fare on JR Hokkaido's fare table is ¥800. Not every Rapid Airport continues past Sapporo, so look for Otaru on the departure board; local trains on the same line take longer.
The train calls at three stations in the city: Otaru-Chikko, Minami-Otaru and Otaru. Only the last two matter for this day. Unreserved seats are fine outside the rush, and an IC card works as it does on the airport run.
From our SAPPORO NORTH apartments it is a four-minute walk to Kita-18-jo Station, then two stops on the Namboku subway line, about four minutes, to Sapporo Station. Allow about 30 minutes from your door to the JR platform, and about an hour and a quarter from your door to the canal.
On the last stretch before Otaru the line runs right beside the sea. Sit on the right-hand side going there and the left coming back.
| Leg | Time | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Apartment to Kita-18-jo Station | 4 min on foot | Namboku subway line |
| Kita-18-jo to Sapporo Station | About 4 min | 2 stops |
| Sapporo to Otaru by JR | 32 min at fastest | ¥800, Rapid Airport |
| Otaru Station to the canal | About 10 min on foot | Longer on packed snow |

How long do you need in Otaru?
Five hours in town is enough for a first visit, so you can leave Sapporo around noon and still be home for the evening. A half day covers the canal and Sakaimachi, the old merchant street. Add an hour or two if you want a sit-down sushi meal or a long look round the glass shops.
The one fixed point is the light. In the depth of winter it is dark between about 16:00 and 17:00, and that is when the canal is at its best, so plan the day backwards from dusk. The shops work the other way: hours vary from shop to shop, and we would not count on browsing after 18:00. The Otaru Orgel-do music box main hall, one of the larger shops, is open 9:00 to 18:00 with no regular closing day, and its upper floors close at 17:45.
Which way round should you walk?
Start at Minami-Otaru Station and finish at Otaru Station. The town slopes down towards the water, so this way you walk downhill, reach the shops while they are open, and arrive at the canal at dusk with the station a short walk behind it.
Plenty of visitors do the reverse and finish at Minami-Otaru. That works in summer. In winter it means walking away from the lights and back uphill in the dark.
- Around noon: leave Sapporo and get off at Minami-Otaru, one stop before Otaru.
- Early afternoon: walk down to the Orgel-do main hall at the end of Sakaimachi street, then along the street past the glass shops and sweet shops.
- Mid-afternoon: warm up somewhere with a coffee, then head for the canal before the light goes.
- Dusk: walk the canal path as the gas lamps come on.
- Evening: an early dinner around Sushiya-dori, the sushi street, then on to Otaru Station.
What is worth seeing in Otaru?
The canal is the reason to come, and everything else fits around it. It was finished in 1923, built out from the shore rather than dug inland, to carry cargo from ships to the warehouses. Part of it was filled in in 1986 after a dispute that ran for more than a decade, which is why the stretch by the road is now 20 metres wide and the North Canal keeps its original 40.
| Where | What it is | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|
| Otaru Canal path | 1,140 m canal, stone warehouses, 63 gas lamps | Lamps from sunset to 24:00; warehouses lit to 22:30 |
| North Canal | The original 40 m width, quieter and less built up | At the far end from Sakaimachi; lamps on a light sensor |
| Sakaimachi street | Old merchant street with glass, sweets and music boxes | Hours differ by shop |
| Otaru Orgel-do main hall | Music box shop in an old building at the end of the street | 9:00 to 18:00, no regular closing day |
| Sushiya-dori | A street near the canal known for its sushi restaurants | Check the day's hours; some places close between lunch and dinner |
What is different in winter 2026-27?
Two things are on at the canal this winter, and they do not overlap. The Blue Canal runs first: blue lighting from 1 November 2026 to 31 January 2027, between Asakusabashi and Chuobashi bridges, from sunset to 22:30. The Snow Light Path follows from 6 to 13 February 2027. Both sets of dates come from the Otaru Tourism Association, read on 5 November 2026.
Between the two, in the first days of February, the gas lamps and the lit warehouses are still there, so a trip that week is not wasted.
Dress as you would for a Sapporo evening, with the wind off the sea on top. Grippy shoes matter most, because the canal path and the slopes in town can be packed snow. Our winter packing guide for Hokkaido has the full list.
| Dates | What | Hours |
|---|---|---|
| 1 Nov 2026 to 31 Jan 2027 | Blue Canal, Asakusabashi to Chuobashi | Sunset to 22:30 |
| 6 to 13 Feb 2027 | Otaru Snow Light Path | Not published yet |
| All year | Gas lamps on the canal path | Sunset to 24:00 |
What do we know about the Otaru Snow Light Path 2027?
The dates are fixed and the detail is not. The Otaru Tourism Association lists 6 to 13 February 2027, gives the venue only as Otaru city, and says more will follow once it is decided. During the festival the canal gas lamps come on early, at 15:00.
Last winter's edition is the best guide to the shape of it, though not to the details. It ran 7 to 14 February 2026, lit from 17:00 to 21:00, and its main venues were the canal, the old Temiya railway line, Otaru Art Base and Tenguyama. Candles sit in snow lanterns and float on the water. Treat those hours and venues as last year's until the 2027 programme appears.
The dates overlap the Sapporo Snow Festival, which runs 4 to 11 February 2027. From 6 to 11 February you can do both, and on 12 and 13 February only Otaru is running. To check, open the winter page of the Otaru Tourism Association site and the festival's own site, and look again a few days before you travel.

Is Otaru worth it in summer?
Yes, and the same day simply starts later. With no snow on the paths and long evenings, leave Sapporo after lunch, keep the Minami-Otaru to Otaru Station direction if you like, and stay for dusk, since the gas lamps wait for sunset whatever the season.
Summer is also when the North Canal repays the extra walk. It is the part of the waterway at its original width, and it is an easy stroll in warm weather that we would not push on an icy January path.
How do you get back, and what if it snows?
Look up your last train on the day, on JR Hokkaido's site or a route app, and work back from it. We do not print times here because timetables change, and you also need the last Namboku Line subway from Sapporo Station if you are not walking or taking a taxi from there.
In heavy snow, check JR Hokkaido's operation information before you leave the apartment and again before you head back from the canal. Treat the 32 minutes as the best case. Highway buses also run between Otaru and Sapporo as a second option, though snow affects the roads too.
If the forecast looks poor, the day is easy to move: nothing here needs a booking, so you can swap Otaru with a day in the city. Our Sapporo winter guide has plenty for that day.
Why make Otaru a day trip from an apartment?
Because you leave your bags behind and come back to your own room. Check-out is not part of the day, wet gloves and socks go in the washer-dryer when you get in, and if you came back without dinner, there is a kitchen.
If you are still choosing a base, our guide to where to stay in Sapporo compares the neighbourhoods. The subway line from Kita-18-jo gets you to Sapporo Station in about four minutes, which is what makes this day simple.
