New Chitose Airport to Sapporo: Train, Bus, or TaxiStay guideAll Good Stay

Take the JR Rapid Airport train, and reach for anything else only when you have a reason: too much luggage, a bus that stops outside your door, or a flight that lands after the last train. The train is the one option that does not share a road with traffic, which in Hokkaido is the whole argument. We run three apartments in Sapporo's Kita ward and three in Tokyo, and 489 stays came through those six doors in the twelve months to September 2026 (measured 1 October 2026, method at our published operating data).

What is the fastest way from New Chitose Airport to Sapporo?

The JR Rapid Airport train, which covers the airport station to Sapporo Station in about 37 to 40 minutes, the figure we publish on our own Sapporo listing. The Rapid Airport (快速エアポート) is JR Hokkaido's limited-stop service between the two, running on through the city towards Otaru several times an hour for most of the day. There is nothing to plan: go down to the platform and take whatever is next.

The station sits directly beneath the domestic terminal. On an international flight you first walk the signposted connecting passage to the domestic side, and that walk is where people lose the train they were aiming for.

When does a bus, a taxi, or a rental car make more sense?

When your destination is nowhere near a station, when there are enough of you to split one fare, or when you are driving out of the city the same day. Each of the three beats the train in one narrow case and loses in every other.

OptionSuitsWhat trips people up
JR Rapid Airport trainAlmost everyone, especially anyone staying on a subway lineThe walk from the international to the domestic terminal
Airport busHotels the route stops outsideIt uses the expressway, so snow and traffic both land on it. No fixed arrival time
TaxiThree or four people with luggage, or a landing after the last trainAbout 60 minutes to our part of the city, priced for the distance. The expensive option, not the fast one
Rental carDriving straight on to a resort or out into HokkaidoWinter driving here is a separate skill, and our building has no parking: coin parking nearby runs roughly ¥1,200 to ¥1,500 a day

Where do I catch the train, and what do people get wrong?

Downstairs from the domestic terminal's arrivals floor, and the usual mistake is making one specific departure into the plan. Buy at a machine or tap an IC card: the Rapid Airport needs no advance booking.

The airport is the end of the line, so the train you board is empty and a large case fits by the door. Check your own route on the day in a route app rather than trusting a figure read in advance, this one included: timetables move with the season.

On a snowy day, what is the first thing to be delayed?

The roads, well before the rails. A bus from New Chitose runs on the expressway, and an expressway in a snowstorm has no recovery plan. JR Hokkaido does cancel in heavy snow, but it announces the cancellation and restarts on a published plan, so you can make a decision. On a bad day the question is not which mode is faster, it is which one tells you what is happening.

Our Sapporo rooms ran at 82.2% occupancy over the twelve months to September 2026 (our operating data), so many of those arrivals happened in snow. What we tell guests: book nothing into the first two hours after landing, and expect the last few minutes to be cleared but slippery. Ploughed is not the same as not icy, and shoes with grip matter more than a thicker coat (what to pack for a Hokkaido winter).

What should I do if I have a lot of luggage?

Send the bags and carry one day of things, if the stay is long enough for the timing to work: delivery from the airport to our apartments takes one to two days, which is a good move on a two-week stay and useless on a two-night trip. Otherwise a coin locker, a taxi if there are several of you, or leaving bags with us before check-in, which we take on request. Rooms open at 16:00, so a morning arrival leaves a few hours to fill. Ski and highway buses leave from the Sapporo Station bus terminal, two subway stops from us (skiing from a Sapporo base).

How long does it really take to reach a room in Kita-18-jo?

About 50 to 60 minutes door to door from the airport, the figure we publish for our own apartments. It is three legs, and only the first one is long.

Is it worth staying two stops out of the centre?

Two stops costs about four minutes and buys a quiet street: from the station below us Odori is about 4 minutes and Susukino about 6. The counter-argument is in where to stay in Sapporo.

What changes if I land late or fly out early?

The last JR out of New Chitose is earlier than a late domestic arrival tends to assume, so check that connection before you book the flight rather than after you book the room. Miss it and the fallback is an hour in a taxi.

The arrival hour itself is not a problem at our apartments: self check-in from 16:00, no front desk that can close, and the door code works whenever you get there. What you need is access to your booking thread, where the code and the entry photos live, so screenshot them before you fly (landing late and getting to your room). For an early departure, work backwards from the first subway: check-out is 11:00, but a 07:00 flight means leaving in the dark.

How should I plan the trip back to the airport?

Backwards from the gate, with an extra hour in winter. Our average stay is 3.3 nights (twelve months to September 2026, our operating data), so on a short trip the two airport journeys are a real share of it. In snow, treat the published journey time as a floor rather than an estimate (our Sapporo winter guide).

Quick answers

How long does the train take from New Chitose Airport to Sapporo?
About 37 to 40 minutes on the JR Rapid Airport train to Sapporo Station, the figure we publish on our own listing. The station is under the domestic terminal and trains leave several times an hour, so there is no need to pick one in advance.
Is the airport bus better than the train?
Only when it stops outside your door, because the bus uses the expressway and inherits every snowfall and traffic jam on it, with no fixed arrival time. The railway republishes a plan when it breaks.
How far is New Chitose Airport from your Sapporo apartments?
About 50 to 60 minutes door to door: roughly 37 to 40 minutes by JR Rapid Airport to Sapporo Station, 2 subway stops on the Namboku Line to Kita-18-jo (about 4 minutes), then a walk of about 4 minutes, roughly 350 m, from exit 2. A taxi is about 60 minutes.
What should I do if snow stops the trains?
Wait for the announcement rather than switching to the road, because the road is usually what failed first. Message us either way, so we know you are delayed.
