If snow delays or cancels your flight into New Chitose, check three things in this order: the airline's own status, JR Hokkaido's operation map for the trains into Sapporo, and a message to your host with the new arrival time. Everything else follows from those three. We run three apartments in Sapporo's Kita ward and welcome guests through every winter, and the arrivals that go smoothly in snow are rarely the lucky ones. They are the ones where the guest knew where to look and the room did not care what time it was.
How do I find out if my flight to New Chitose is delayed or cancelled?
From your airline first, because the airline decides and its app or website is updated before anything else. The airport's English site has a Today's Flights page, which is the quickest way to see whether the trouble is your flight or the whole airport: one late arrival is a delay, a column of cancellations is a weather day.
Snow decisions tend to arrive in waves rather than all at once. Check the evening before, again the morning you fly, and once more before you leave for your departure airport. If the airline offers to move you to another flight, that choice belongs to the airline's own rules, so follow its app rather than an article, including this one.
How do I check whether the trains into Sapporo are running?
On JR Hokkaido's English operation information, which the railway links from its homepage as the Affected area map (checked 31 October 2026). It shows suspended and delayed lines on a map of Hokkaido, and a separate train location page shows where the trains on your line actually are. The JR Rapid Airport is the train between the airport and Sapporo Station, normally about 37 to 40 minutes (the normal route from New Chitose).
Check it before you land, not at the ticket gate. On a heavy snow day the queue for the bus forms the moment JR announces a suspension, and knowing a few minutes earlier is the whole advantage.
| What to check | Where | When |
|---|---|---|
| Your flight | The airline's app or website; the airport's Today's Flights page | The evening before, the morning you fly, before leaving for the airport |
| Trains to Sapporo | JR Hokkaido English site: Affected area map, Train location | Before boarding, and again on landing |
| Your room | Your booking message thread with us | As soon as your arrival time changes |
What should I do if I land after the trains have stopped?
Wait for JR Hokkaido's announcement before you join any queue, then choose between the train when it restarts and a taxi. JR's own advice for a suspension is to consider a bus or a taxi, with the note that buses become extremely crowded once trains stop, and the bus uses the same expressway the snow has already reached. A taxi to Sapporo is about 60 minutes from about ¥17,000 per vehicle, the figure JR publishes, so it makes most sense for a group that can share it.
In heavy snow the airport has opened the terminal building overnight for passengers whose flights were cancelled, as Hokkaido newspapers reported in January 2026. On the busiest of those nights there was not enough bedding for everyone, so treat it as a safety net rather than a plan. A warm layer and a charged phone in your hand luggage make that night far easier (packing for a Hokkaido winter).

Can I still check in if I arrive in the middle of the night?
Yes. Our Sapporo apartments are self check-in from 16:00 with no last check-in time, so the door code works at 23:00, at 02:00 or the next morning. There is no front desk to close, which is the part of a late arrival that usually goes wrong elsewhere (landing late and getting to your room).
From Sapporo Station the last stretch is short: two stops north on the Namboku subway line to Kita-18-jo, then about 4 minutes on foot from the exit. The pavements are cleared in winter but can be icy, so take the walk slowly with a suitcase.
See the Sapporo apartmentsHow do I let you know I will be late, or a day late?
Send one message in your booking thread with the new flight and the time you expect to land; that is all we need. We answer at any hour, though a message at 02:00 reaches a person more slowly than one at 14:00, so send it as soon as the delay is known rather than on landing.
If the flight is cancelled and you will arrive a day later, tell us the same way. What can be done about the night you missed depends on the booking and the terms of the platform you booked through, so ask us rather than assume either way. Before you fly, screenshot the door code, the entry photos and the address in Japanese, so a flat battery or a slow airport connection does not stand between you and the door.
What if my flight home from Sapporo is cancelled?
Check the flight before you leave the room, not at the airport, and message us if it has been cancelled. Check-out is at 11:00; if you need another night, ask, and we will tell you straight away whether the room is free. If you only need somewhere for your bags while you sort out the journey, ask us about that too.
On a snowy day leave for the airport an hour earlier than you would in autumn and treat the published train time as a minimum. If the trains are suspended in the morning, staying near Sapporo Station with the operation map open is usually a better place to wait than the airport.

How can I plan a winter trip so a delay costs less?
Give the first and last day slack. A delay is only expensive when something is booked right behind it, so in winter we suggest an earlier flight into Sapporo where you have the choice, nothing fixed in the first evening, and no tight connection to an onward domestic or international flight on the day you leave.
- Fly in earlier in the day when you can: a late flight has fewer options behind it if it is cancelled.
- Keep one night's essentials and a warm layer in hand luggage, not in the hold.
- Save the airline app, JR Hokkaido's operation map and your booking thread where you can open them in one tap.
- Leave a free day before any international connection out of Japan.
