From 20 November to 25 December 2026, Odori Park in central Sapporo is lit every evening from 16:30 and a German-style Christmas market runs at its eastern end; the city's other illumination venues stay lit into March 2027. We run three apartments in Sapporo's Kita ward, four minutes on foot from a subway station on the line that goes straight to Odori, and this is what we tell guests who come for it.
When are the Sapporo White Illumination and the Christmas market in 2026?
Both open on Friday 20 November 2026 and the Odori part of both closes on Friday 25 December. The White Illumination is the city's winter light festival, now in its 46th year, spread over Odori Park, the main street south of Sapporo Station and several squares. The Munich Christmas Market is a market of wooden stalls named after Sapporo's sister city in Germany.
The figures below come from the official Sapporo tourism site, checked on 29 October 2026. The organisers say lighting hours can change without notice, so check the official page on the day you go.

What is at the Odori venue in 2026?
Three blocks of light installations, one theme to a block, according to the official venue page. Block 3 has arches of light you can walk under, block 4 a white tunnel built around snowflakes, and block 5 a star-themed square where the lights respond to people moving through it. The organisers also describe a new symbol object for Odori this year.
Walking the three blocks at an easy pace takes well under an hour, which is about as long as most people want to stand outside on a December evening. Start at block 3, the closest to the Christmas market, and walk west through blocks 4 and 5.
Outside Odori, the trees along the main street from Sapporo Station to Susukino are lit, and for 2026 the stretch from Odori to Susukino adds a programme of changing colours. On Minami 1-jo, about 70,000 LEDs light 46 ginkgo trees over roughly 300 metres. These are on the walk to dinner rather than destinations of their own.
How do you get to Odori Park from Kita-18-jo?
Take the Namboku subway line south from Kita-18-jo Station to Odori: about four minutes, with Sapporo Station two stops in between. The walk from our apartments to Kita-18-jo is about four minutes, so you are under the lights within a quarter of an hour of closing the door, and the whole trip runs underground.
Odori Station sits beneath the park, and the illumination blocks are directly above it. For the Christmas market, walk east along the park towards the TV tower. Coming back, the same line takes you north again; on 23 to 25 December, when the lights stay on until midnight, look up the last train before you stay for the final hour.
What is the Munich Christmas Market in Sapporo like?
It is a short row of wooden stalls selling warm drinks, food and Christmas ornaments, open from late morning, so you can go in daylight and come back for the lights. It sits in blocks 1 and 2 of Odori Park, a few minutes' walk from the illumination blocks.
Two practical points. The market closes at 21:00, an hour before the Odori lights, so do the market first and the lights after. And it is outdoors in a Sapporo December: you will stand still while you eat, which is when the cold gets in, so keep the gloves on and choose a warm drink.

When is the best time of evening to go?
Straight after the lights come on at 16:30, on a weekday if you can. In late November and December it is already dark by then in Sapporo, so you see the lights at full effect without waiting late into a cold night, and you can have dinner afterwards.
The three evenings from 23 to 25 December are the only ones lit until midnight, and the last chance before the Odori venue closes. Expect them to be the busiest of the season and plan a little more time in the crowd.
A simple evening plan from Kita-18-jo
This is the order we suggest to guests, and it keeps the time spent standing in the cold to about an hour and a half. Leave the apartment around 15:45, take the Namboku line to Odori, and spend the first half hour at the Christmas market in blocks 1 and 2 while it is still quiet.
At 16:30 the lights come on: walk the illumination blocks from 3 to 5. Go down to the underground shopping street to warm up, have dinner in the centre or one stop south in Susukino, and be back at Kita-18-jo within a quarter of an hour of leaving. If you have more than one evening, save the second for a walk along the main street to Susukino, which is lit as well.
What should you wear to see the lights in the evening?
Boots with a deep-grip sole, a hat, gloves and one more layer than you wore in the afternoon. An evening at the illumination is mostly standing and slow walking, and the pavements around Odori are often packed snow by December, so grip and warmth matter more than a heavy coat.
Gloves that work a phone screen save you taking them off for every photo. If you are coming from a warmer country, our Hokkaido winter packing guide goes through the list item by item, including what you can skip because the apartment has a dryer.

Where can you warm up near Odori?
Underground. Odori Station connects to the shopping streets beneath the city, Pole Town and Aurora Town, and to the underground walkway that runs to Sapporo Station, so you can drop below street level for twenty minutes, buy a coffee, and come back up without walking in the snow.
This also makes the evening easy to split: lights and the market above, dinner or shopping below, and the subway home from the same station.
Can you still see illuminations after Christmas?
Yes. According to the official listing, the White Illumination as a whole runs until 14 March 2027; after 25 December it continues at venues away from Odori, such as the street south of Sapporo Station and Minami 1-jo. For 2026 the organisers have added two new venues, the Former Hokkaido Government Office (the red brick building) and Nakajima Park.
The official pages do not yet list the end date of each venue, so check the venue page on the official site before you go, and treat the dates in this article as those published on 29 October 2026. In February the centre of the city changes to the Snow Festival; our Snow Festival guide covers that.
Where to stay for the illumination
Somewhere on a subway line that goes straight to Odori, so that the evening does not end with a wait for a bus in the snow. Our three SAPPORO NORTH apartments are in a quiet residential part of Kita ward, four minutes from Kita-18-jo Station, each with a kitchen, a washer-dryer and room for up to four or five people.
After the lights, you are home in about fifteen minutes, with somewhere to cook a hot dinner and to dry gloves and hats overnight. Our winter guide to Sapporo covers the rest of the season.
